Paper Prototype

On this page, we created paper prototypes of the Antibio Advisor website and presented them to users, asking them to perform specific tasks. Following this presentation, we observed the ease or difficulty users encountered while using the application.

User Briefing

Welcome to our Antibiotics Advice website! Our website is your one-stop resource for a wide range of medical questions and services related to antibiotics. Whether you have queries about antibiotics, need to locate nearby pharmacies and general practitioners, or seek explanations for medical terminology, our intelligent chatbot is here to help. It provides answers to your questions about antibiotics and other medical concerns and even offers voice / text-to-speech capabilities. Additionally, our interactive map makes it easy to find nearby pharmacies and medical practitioners. You can also utilize our acronym explainer to better understand the terminology surrounding antibiotics. Your health and well-being are our top priorities, and we're dedicated to providing you with the information and services you need.

Scenario Tasks

As you navigate our website, here are a few scenarios to help you make the most of your experience:

Antibiotic Information

  • Initiate a conversation with our chatbot to inquire about the appropriate use of antibiotics, potential side effects, or any questions related to antibiotic medications. You can also utilise the voice and text-to-speech functionality to facilitate conversation tracking. Feel free to clear the conversation and start anew if you wish to discuss different issues.

Locating Healthcare Providers

  • Use our interactive map to find the closest pharmacies and general practitioners in your area. Simply select a nearby pharmacy or general practitioner, and the map will provide you with the shortest route to your selected location.

Medical Abbreviation Glossary

  • If you come across unfamiliar medical abbreviations, explore our dedicated section to decipher their meanings. Select the abbreviation, and we will provide you with a clear explanation.

Prototypes Photos & Videos

In this section, paper prototypes were created to better visualise our current plans and ideas for developing the AntiBio Advisor website. Thanks to the prototypes, the designs are represented in a more abstract and simple manner. Moreover, these prototypes aim to provide us with insights with regards to the user experience, which can then be used to refine the interface and identify other potential features to be added. Below are a collection of photos and videos created to showcase the concept design of the website and how we envision user interactions with the platform.

Figure 1 on the right shows a simple rundown of the website. The website first greets the user with the title which is also accompanied by a button to immediately take the user to the chatbot. If the user decides to explore the website on their own, they will first find a brief introduction to antibiotics and how their misuse can be harmful. Moreover, Figure 2 better showcases what the Videos and Facts Section, which contains a video (provided by WHO) and a few facts regarding antibiotics.

Back to the first figure, after the Videos and Facts section is the chatbot itself. The chatbot consists of the window where the user can communicate and query the chatbot, which will in turn reply with the appropriate response. The chatbot also comes equipped with the appropriate buttons to better personalise the chatbot experience. Following the chatbot is an Abbreviations and Notation Section and a Find Nearby Pharmacies and General Practitioners Section.

In Figure 3 on the left, the Abbreviations and Notations section consists of the main title followed by three dropdown lists the user can choose from. Using the three selected items from the list, an explanation is generated to explain to the user what the doctor's prescription means in simple terms.

In Figure 4 on the right, the Pharmacy and General Practitioner Section consists of a map with multiple markers. The red markers represent pharmacies whilst the blue markers represent general practitioners. Essentially, whenever either of the two types of markers is selected, the shorted route from the user's current location towards the pharmacy or general practitioner is displayed.

Figure 5 below depicts a simple use case scenario of how the interface would work. FIrstly, the user is greeted by the website title followed by a brief description of the function of the website. The Let's Chat button underneath the description directs the user to the chatbot, with which they are immediately greeted via an opening message. The user can then query the chatbot, and this back and forth conversation can continue on until some form of conclusion is reached. The user is then possibly advised to seek a general practitioner for medical advice or the nearest pharmacy to give back any unneeded antibiotics. In this case, the user can then scroll down to the Find Nearby Pharmacies / General Practitioners section and once a marker is clicked, the shortest route to it is displayed.

Observations

During the paper prototyping exercise, multiple testers engaged with the system and offered valuable feedback and criticism on the website's layout and functionality. Here are some suggested improvements:

  1. Expand the map's functionality to include both pharmacies and general practitioners. Distinguish them with different map markers.

  2. Enhance the clarity of the abbreviations and notation section to improve user understanding.

  3. Increase the size of the chatbot area to facilitate smoother conversation flow and allow more of the conversation to be visible to the user.

  4. Implement voice functionality for the chatbot, enabling users to speak, with their voice transcribed as input for the bot.

  5. Introduce text-to-speech capabilities for specific chatbot messages, not limited to the entire conversation.

These enhancements aim to create a more user-friendly and effective user experience.
